MY REVENGE FOR FATHER
Part 5
"Raka said he couldn't get a scholarship because of financial limitations. As far as I know, hasn't Raka's father been promoted recently? Why didn't he support Raka going to college?" Mr. Yudha asked, a question I couldn't answer at all.
I stayed silent for a moment until he seemed to understand the situation at my home.
"Alright then, excuse me, Ma'am. Thank you for your time. Sorry to bother you."
He just smiled, nodded, and let me leave.
I walked wearily toward my bicycle parked in the schoolyard. My mind was in turmoil, and guilt weighed heavily on my chest.
How could this happen...?
How could I not know anything about my own son?
I just found out that Raka is actually a very smart child. I felt like a complete failure as a mother.
I remembered how I had never attended his report card days at school. He never complained or asked me to see his exam results.
It wasn’t that I didn’t care, but now I realize I might have been too busy taking care of his younger siblings.
Now, the regret drowned me in a deep abyss of sadness.
When I arrived home, I was greeted by the sight of Mas Amran standing with his hands on his hips in front of the house.
I had almost forgotten that Mas Amran came home last night and would start his afternoon shift today, as I had rushed straight to Raka’s school.
I parked my bicycle in the yard and approached Mas Amran, whose face looked grim.
"Where have you been, huh? Why did you leave the kids alone at home? Where did you wander off to?" he barked at me, making me lower my head.
"Mom..." Raiza ran up and hugged my leg tightly. I gently stroked her head. Meanwhile, Raina quickly went back inside the house upon seeing her father’s expression.
"I went to Raka’s school, Mas," I answered quietly. He didn’t even seem aware that his eldest son was missing.
"Then why didn't Raina go to school? You had her babysit this whiny kid?" he snapped, pointing at Raiza.
"Raina had the day off, Mas. Her teacher had a meeting. I asked her to watch over Raiza at home. Besides, she's about to move up to third grade, so there's not much left to do. She's just waiting for her report card now," I explained at length.
"Tch! Your kid woke up crying, looking for you. She cried so loudly it disturbed my sleep! Handle her yourself! Such a headache!" he grumbled.
I sighed in frustration. But as Mas Amran turned to leave, I called him back.
"Mas... wait."
"What now?"
"Don't you want to know why I went to Raka's school?" His forehead creased but then he scoffed sarcastically.
"What for? That kid probably caused some trouble again," Mas Amran folded his arms.
His dismissive attitude made my blood boil. How could he be so indifferent to his own child’s situation?
Ah, I forgot. He never cared, especially when it came to Raka.
"Dear, go inside first. Play with Kak Ina," I told Raiza. I didn’t want her witnessing our argument. Luckily, she obediently went inside.
After Raiza was inside, I continued speaking to Mas Amran.
"Mas, Raka’s diploma hasn't been paid off. His tuition fees and building fees are still outstanding." I wanted to see his reaction upon hearing this.
"So what?" he replied indifferently.
"What do you mean 'so what'? Please, Mas, you need to pay them. You’re his father. Should I really have to explain that? Whose responsibility is it if not yours?" I asked, my anger rising.
Mas Amran sneered.
"What?! Pay for it?! You wish!" he snapped.
"You forgot? That kid of yours acted all high and mighty, giving you money to buy Raina’s uniform. And now you want me to pay his tuition? Isn’t he the one who thinks he can do everything? Isn't he the one who said he’d get a job and take you away from here, huh? Can't even pay his own tuition!"
"Mas!" I shouted angrily. It was the second time I had raised my voice at him.
"What?!" he barked back just as loud. "Defending that ungrateful kid again, huh? Go ahead! Where is he now, huh? Call him out! Let’s see if he dares to ask his father for money!"
Mas Amran stormed into the house.
"Raka! Come here, you ungrateful brat! Raka! Get out here!"
He banged on Raka’s door, not knowing that Raka would never answer, because he was already gone.
I followed him until he forcefully swung open Raka’s door, causing a loud bang.
His eyes widened when he saw the empty room.
"Where did he go?" he asked, turning to me.
"Don't tell me he didn’t come home last night and was out wandering around?"
I just stared at him, my eyes filled with disappointment.
"Why are you silent? Answer me! So it's true he was out all night? Ungrateful kid—"
"Raka is gone, Mas," I cut him off.
"Gone? Gone where? It’s still morning. He must have wandered off again!" He still didn’t understand.
"Stop blaming my son like that, Mas! Raka left. He left without saying goodbye. He said... he wanted to find a job. I don't even know when he left. This is all your fault, Mas!" I couldn’t hold back my tears anymore.
I saw Mas Amran remain silent for a moment, glancing around Raka's empty room.
"Tch! Good. That means one less burden in this house," he said so casually, completely shattering the last of my patience.
"You monster! You heartless man! How could you say something like that when your own child left without a word? Don’t you even care if he has any money to eat? Where he will live? Which city he went to? You don't even worry about your own flesh and blood, Mas?!" I screamed at him emotionally.
Mas Amran remained silent, not showing a hint of guilt.
"I can’t believe you, Mas! How can you see me and your children as nothing but burdens? Raka left because of you! You always said that me and your children are just burdens!" I pointed my finger at his hardened jawline.
"Shut up!" Mas Amran yelled. "How dare you shout at your husband, huh? How dare you?"
He raised his hand and harshly grabbed my jaw.
"What do you and your kids think you are, huh? Answer me!" He let go roughly, causing my head to snap sideways.
"You are nothing but burdens in my life! All you ever complain about is money, money, and more money! Do you think I'm a money machine? What have I gotten from you? Nothing! So don't act like you’re so important!"
"You're cruel, Mas! You're heartless!"
"I don't care! I don't care what you say! Good that kid left. All he ever did was raise my blood pressure! I hope he never comes back! I don't need an ungrateful son like him!"
"Mas!"
This time, he had truly crossed the line.
"What?! You want to argue some more, huh? Want to defend that kid again? Go ahead, go after him! That way I’ll be rid of you too! All you ever do is make my life harder!"
Mas Amran stormed off after spewing those hurtful words.
My emotions had completely exploded. My patience had reached its limit.
I think...
This is the end.
I can no longer stay in a marriage like this, with a toxic man like Mas Amran.
I give up...
'Fine, Mas!
If you really want me to leave, then I will leave for good.
Don’t ever hope I’ll return to this house again.
Even if the world ends, I will never come back to you.
I pray that your life falls apart after this, Mas!
And may you regret this for the rest of your life!'
